5th Grade Line Plot Worksheets

Welcome to our collection of 5th Grade Line Plot worksheets.

Here you will find our range of free line plot worksheets, which will help you to learn how to create and interpret line plots at a 5th grade level.

We also have an online quiz where you can test your knowledge of line plots and get immediate feedback!

5th Grade Line Plot Worksheets

Common Core

  • Make a line plot to display a data set of measurements in fractions of a unit (1/2, 1/4, 1/8).
  • Use operations on fractions for this grade to solve problems involving information presented in line plots.

This objective is similar to the 4th grade objective but includes using multiplication and division with the fraction amounts.

Our worksheets also include finding the mode, median and mean values of the data within some of the line plots.

What is a Line Plot

A line plot is a visual way of recording data values.

A dot plot is another name for a line plot.

In a line plot, the data is displayed as points, or check marks, above a number line.

Example Line Plot showing children's ages at a tennis club.

line plot example image

The line plot above, shows the ages of a group of children playing at a tennis club.

Using a line plot, we can clearly see:

  • how the data is distributed between the ages of 6 to 11.
  • which the most and least common ages are
  • the number of children in the club by counting the check marks

One of the advantages of using a line plot, rather than a bar graph or line graph, is the speed and ease at which they can be created.

Line plots are also very useful for finding the median (or middle) value, as the data has already been sorted into order of size in the dot plot.

5th Grade Line Plot Worksheets Information

These sheets have been created for students around 5th grade level.

All the worksheets involve creating and analysing different line plots.

In the answer sheets, we have used a 'X' symbol for the data. However a range of different symbols can be used - a common alternative is small circles.

We have split our 5th grade line plots worksheets into 3 sections.

  • The first section is all about creating line plots by reading a range of different scales.
  • The second section is all about interpreting line plots and answering questions about pre-prepared dot plots.
  • There is also a separate challenge section where you need to use your problem solving skills to place the data correctly into the line plot.

Creating Line Plots 5th Grade Worksheets

For these worksheets you need to read a scale to work out the data values which then need to be put into the line plot.

The scales go up in 1/8 divisions for most of the measurements.

Interpreting Line Plots Worksheets 4th Grade

These sheets involve answering questions about a range of line plots.

There are two line plots on each sheet to answer questions about.

Line Plots Challenges 5th Grade

We have created a sheet for more able students who are already confident using line plots.

They are more advanced and require problem solving skills to work out.

You have to follow the clues to work out where to put the data points into the line plot.

There are two separate line plots to solve on this sheet.

  • find a missing data point when the mean is given.
  • find the median of a set of data.

Line Plots 5th Grade Online Quiz

Our quizzes have been created using Google Forms.

At the end of the quiz, you will get the chance to see your results by clicking 'See Score'.

This will take you to a new webpage where your results will be shown. You can print a copy of your results from this page, either as a pdf or as a paper copy.

For incorrect responses, we have added some helpful learning points to explain which answer was correct and why.

We do not collect any personal data from our quizzes, except in the 'First Name' and 'Group/Class' fields which are both optional and only used for teachers to identify students within their educational setting.

We also collect the results from the quizzes which we use to help us to develop our resources and give us insight into future resources to create.

We would be grateful for any feedback on our quizzes, please let us know using our Contact Us link, or use the Facebook Comments form at the bottom of the page.

This quick quiz tests your knowledge and skill at reading and interpreting line plots at a 5th grade level.

Many of the questions on this quiz have been taken from the questions on the Interpreting Line Plots worksheets.
