When we use the word 'percentage' in everyday life, we tend to mean a small amount relative the whole.
In math, however, percentage has a much more specific definition.
The word per cent comes from the latin per centum which means out of 100.
In other words, when we say thirty seven percent, we mean 37 parts out of 100.
There is a simple way to calculate percentages of a given number.
There are also some special cases like finding 50% or 10% of a number which are even easier to work out.
