Converting Customary Units of Length Examples

Example 1) Convert 72 inches into feet.

The measurement fact we need is 1 foot = 12 inches.

So to convert inches into feet, we need to divide the number of inches by 12.

72 ÷ 12 = 6.

So 72 inches is equal to 6 feet.

Example 2) I walk 10,000 yards. How many miles and yards have I walked?

The measurement fact we need is 1 mile = 1760 yards.

So to convert yards into miles, we need to divide the number of inches by 1760.

10,000 ÷ 1760 = 5.681...

This means that 10,000 yards is equal to 5 whole miles and some extra yards.

5 miles = 5 x 1760 = 8,800 yards

10,000 - 8,800 = 1,200

So 10,000 yards is equal to 5 miles and 1,200 yards.

Example 3) How many feet in total is 27 yards and 2 feet?

The measurement fact we need is 1 yard = 3 feet.

So to convert yards into feet, we need to multiply the number of yards by 3.

27 x 3 = 81

We need to add on the extra 2 feet.

81 + 2 = 83

So 27 yards and 2 feet = 83 feet.

Example 4) Convert 1 ½ miles into feet.

The measurement fact we need is 1 miles = 5280 feet.

1 ½ x 5280 = 7920

So 1 ½ miles = 7920 feet.
