If you need support to find out how to divide fractions, there is more help further down this page!

To enter a fraction, you have to enter the numerator followed by '/' followed by the denominator. E.g. 4/5 or 23/7

To enter a mixed fraction, first type the whole number followed by space followed by the numerator followed by '/' followed by the denominator.

E.g. 3 1/4 (3 and a quarter), 7 2/5 (seven and two-fifths), 10 4/11 (10 and four-elevenths).

Click the Divide button and the calculator will show the resulting division both as an improper fraction or a mixed number (where applicable).

This calculator will work out Fraction1 ÷ Fraction2.

Frazer says "To divide a mixed fraction by another fraction, follow these four easy steps..."

Step 1

Change the whole number to a fraction by putting it over a denominator of 1.

Convert any mixed fractions into improper fractions. Any integers (whole numbers) should be written as fractions with a denominator of 1.

Step 2

Swap the numerator and denominator of the dividend fraction (the fraction after the ÷ sign) and change the operand to a 'x' instead of a '÷ '

Step 3

Multiply the numerators of the fractions together, and the denominators of the fractions together. This will give you the answer.

Step 4 (Optional)

You may want to convert the fraction into its simplest form or convert it back to a mixed fraction (if it is an improper fraction).

Example 1) 3
1
3

5
6
*

Step 1)

3 1 3 ÷ 1 5 6 = 10 3 ÷ 11 6

Step 2)

10 3 ÷ 11 6 = 10 3 x 6 11

Step 3)

10 3 x 6 11 = 60 33

Steps 4)

Answer in simplest form is 20 11 or 1 9 11

*
Example 2) 4 ÷ 2
1
3
*

Step 1)

4 ÷ 2 1 3 = 4 1 ÷ 7 3

Step 2)

4 1 ÷ 7 3 = 4 1 x 3 7

Step 3)

4 1 x 3 7 = 12 7

Steps 4)

This answer is already in simplest form 12 7 or 1 5 7
