About Number Lines

Number lines are a great way to understand numbers and see them visually on a line.

They can be very useful in teaching counting as well as adding and subtracting.

Finding numbers on a number line, especially when the divisions are unmarked is a great way to develop counting on and back.

Find the Number on the Number Line Game

  • You will need a number line sheet (version 1a - landscape or portrait), a pencil and a piece of scrap paper.
  • One person is the Finder and one child is the Picker.
  • The Picker chooses a number between 1 and 100 and writes it on the scrap paper and keeps it hidden.
  • The Finder has to choose a number on the number line and make a mark.
  • The Picker says whether his number is bigger than the marked number, smaller or whether the number is the same.
  • If the number is bigger or smaller, the Finder has to choose another number on the number line and make a mark.
  • If the number is the same, then the Finder has found the number and the game stops.
  • The Finder's score is the number of marks made, so if they have made 5 marks on the number line, the score is 5.
  • The players then swap and the Finder becomes the Picker and the Picker becomes the Finder.
  • The new Finder wins the game by finding the number in fewer goes (with a lower score).
