2nd Grade Math Learning

At Second Grade, children love to explore Math with fun Math activities and games. Children will enjoy completing these Second Grade Math games and Math worksheets printable whilst learning at the same time.

During Second Grade, the Math work extends to place value up to 1000. Children practice counting in ones, tens and hundreds from different starting points. They build on their understanding of addition and subtraction and develop quick recall of basic addition and subtraction facts. Their written methods in addition and subtraction extends into using 3 digits.

At 2nd Grade children also learn to solve simple addition and subtraction problems and work out the answers mentally or on paper. Children are also introduced to mutiplication and division at this stage, and also the fraction 'half'. They learn their multiplication table up to 5x5.

The free printable Second Grade Math Worksheets, Games and other free Grade 2 Math sheets will help your child to achieve their Elementary Math benchmark set out by Achieve, Inc.

In the UK, 2nd Grade is equivalent to Year 3.

Salamander Combine It 999!

Salamander Combine It is a place value game which involves recombining hundreds, tens and ones to make a 3 digit number.

The aim of the game is to make as many numbers on the board as you can, at the same time as trying to make lines of 3 counters.

Learning skills: place value to 999, strategy.

Spot the Calculation Game

Spot the Calculation is a good game for developing mental calculation skills using all 4 operations.

The aim of the game is for one player to make a calculation using the numbers on several dice. The other player then has to try to guess what the calculation was from the answer.

Number of players: 2
Learning skills: add, subtract, multiply and divide using numbers 1 to 6.

Catch the Stars 0-20

Catch the Stars 0-20 is one of our Math Games Second Grade which uses dice rolls to make different numbers.

For all of these games you will need at least one die, and some counters.

The aim of the game is to use the numbers on the dice to catch as many stars as possible.

Learning skills: using different operations to make numbers to 20 with 3 dice.

Operation Salamander

Operation Salamander is another dice game that uses die rolls with operations to create different numbers.

It can be played on many different levels, from quite young children and upwards.

Learning skills: using different operations to make numbers to 25 with 3 dice.

Race to the Moon

Race to the Moon is one of our Math Games Second Grade that develops rapid recall of Math facts.

The aim of the game is to be the first player to complete an unbroken path of counters from the Earth to the Moon.

It is a simple game to play, and only requires different colored counters.

Grade: 2nd Grade+
Number of players: 2 or 3.
Learning skills: subtracting numbers to 20.

Race to the Moon - Multiplication to 5x5

Grade: Grade: 2nd Grade and up
Number of players: 2
Learning: Multiplication facts to 5x5.

Subtraction Cover Up

Subtraction Cover Up is a set Math subtraction games which develops children's quick recall of their subtraction facts.

The aim of the game is to cover up a line of 3 counters before your opponents can.

For this game you will need some counters and two dice.

Grade: 2nd Grade and upwards
Number of players: 2
Learning: this game develops quick recall of subtraction facts to 20.

The Multiples Game

The Multiples Game is a game which helps children to recognise when a number is a multiple of another number. It also helps to reinforce their tables knowledge.

The aim of the game is to score as many points as possible by making rows of three counters.

You will need one or two dice and counters to play this game.

Grade: 2nd Grade and upwards
Number of players: 2
Learning: multiplication tables up to the 6 times table, multiples of numbers to 6, strategy.

Tables Cover Up

Tables Cover Up is a multiplication game which involves using multiplication facts and strategy to outwit your opponent.

The aim of the game is to get four counters in a row.

To play this game, you will need some counters.

Tables Cover Up to 5x5

Grade: 2nd Grade and up
Number of players: 2-3.
Learning skills: multiplication to 5x5, strategic thinking.
