4 Digit Addition and Subtraction

Welcome to our 4 Digit Addition and Subtraction page.

Here you will find our selection of 3rd Grade Addition and Subtraction Worksheets, which will help your child learn to add and subtract numbers with up to 4 digits.

All the worksheets on this page involve using both addition and subtraction problems.

4 Digit Addition and Subtraction Worksheets

This page contains a range of different worksheets to help you to practice your 4-digit addition and subtraction skills.

Once students are confident with column addition and subtraction, it is useful to get students to use both methods on the same worksheet to help them embed the correct method for each operation.

We also have some dedicated webpages to help you to understand and master 4-digit addition and 4-digit subtraction separately.

There a range of worksheets suitable for different levels of ability, with challenges for more able students.

The aim of these worksheets is to enable you to practice both column addition and subtraction problems on the same sheet.

Using our resources will help your child to:

  • practice 4-digit addition and 4-digit subtraction;
  • set out a 4-digit addition and subtraction problem correctly.
  • apply your addition and subtraction skills to solve a range of problems

4 Digit Addition and Subtraction Worked Examples

We have included a worked example for addition and one example for subtraction to help you understand the process involved.

There are further worked examples on our dedicated 4-digit addition worksheets page and 4-digit subtraction worksheets pages

Example 1) Work out 8076 + 3452.

4 digit addition example 1a

Step 1) Add the Ones digit of both numbers together.

Adding the Ones gives us: 6 + 2 = 8 Ones.
We write 8 below the line in the Ones place.

4 digit addition example 1b

Step 2) Add the Tens digit of both numbers together, remember to add any Tens that were carried over.

  • If the total of the two digits is 10 or more, then regroup the 10 Tens into 1 Hundred and move it into the Hundreds column.

Adding the Tens gives us: 7 + 5 = 12 Tens = 1 Hundred + 2 Tens.
We write 1 at the top of the Hundreds column and write 2 below the line in the Tens place.

4 digit addition example 1c

Step 3) Add the Hundreds digit of both numbers together, remember to add any Hundreds that were carried over.

Adding the Hundreds gives us: 1 + 0 + 4 = 5 Hundreds.
We write 5 below the line in the Hundreds place.

4 digit addition example 1d

Step 4) Add the Thousands digit of both numbers together, remember to add any Thousands that were carried over.

  • If the total of the two digits is 10 or more, then regroup the 10 Thousands into 1 Ten Thousand and write it in the Thousands place.

Adding the Thousands gives us: 8 + 3 = 11 Thousands = 1 Ten Thousand + 1 Thousand.
We write 1 below the line in the Ten Thousands place and 1 below the line in the Thousands place.

As there are no further digits to add up, we have finished.

4 digit addition example 1e

This gives us a final answer of 8076 + 3452 = 11,528

Example 2) Work out 9280 − 8434.

4 digit subtraction example 1a

Step 1) Subtract the Ones digit of the subtrahend from the Ones digit of the minuend.

  • If the Ones digit on the top row is less than the Ones digit on the bottom row then take a Ten from the number on the top row and convert it into 10 Ones.

As 0 < 4, 0 − 4 will result in a negative answer.

So we need to exchange one Ten into 10 Ones. There are now 7 Tens and 10 Ones.

4 digit subtraction example 1b

Subtracting the Ones gives us: 10 − 4 = 6.

4 digit subtraction example 1c

Step 2) Subtract the Tens digit.

Subtracting the Tens gives us: 7 − 3 = 4.

We write 4 below the line in the Tens place.

4 digit subtraction example 1d

Step 3) Subtract the Hundreds digit.

  • If the Hundreds digit in the top row is less than the Hundreds digit in the bottom row then take a Thousand from the minuend (top row) and convert it into 10 Hundreds.

As 2 < 4, 2 − 4 will result in a negative answer.

So we need to exchange one Thousand into 10 Hundreds. There are now 8 Thousands and 12 Hundreds.

4 digit subtraction example 1e

Subtracting the Hundreds now gives us: 12 − 4 = 8.

4 digit subtraction example 1f

Step 3) Subtract the Thousands digit.

Subtracting the Thousands gives us: 8 − 8 = 0

We write 0 below the line in the Thousands place.

As there are no further digits to subtract, we have finished.

4 digit subtraction example 1g

This gives us a final answer of 9280 − 8434 = 846

4 Digit Addition and Subtraction Worksheets

We have split the sheets into 2 sections.

  • The first section is the easiest and involves 4-digit addition and subtraction problems both with and without regrouping
  • The second section is for more confident students and involves 4-digit addition and subtraction challenges.

The sheet 1 to 4 are all at a similar level of difficulty. They are straightforward and just involve working out a range of standard column addition and subtraction problems.

Sheet 5 & 6 are slightly harder and involve writing out the addition and subtraction problems in columns and then solving them.

4-Digit Addition and Subtraction Challenges

The frist two sheets involve filling in the missing digits in the 4-digit additions and subtraction, where the digits may belong to any of the numbers in the problem.

They require a sound knowledge of the 4-digit addition and subtraction methods.

The third sheet involves using 4-digit addition and subtraction to find the smallest and largest totals that can be made, and is more of an exploratory activity. This sheet would make a great extension activity for more able learners.
