Each sheet consists of a range of 5 or 6 subtraction word problems.
There is a space on each sheet for working out using an appropriate method.
We have split the 3-digit subtraction worksheets up into word problems with and without regrouping.
Using these sheets will help your child to:
An electric car has a range of 420 miles.
The car travels 276 miles.
How much further can it travel on the same charge?
After reading the problem, we can see that we need to work out 420 − 276 to solve it.
First we set up our subtraction.
Next we subtract the ones. 0 − 6 leads to a negative answer, so we will need to regroup one of the tens into 10 ones.
We can now subtract the ones. 10 − 6 = 4
Next we subtract the tens. 1 − 7 results in a negative answer, so we will need to regroup one of the hundreds into 10 tens.
We can now subtract the tens. 11 − 7 = 4
Next we subtract the hundreds. 3 − 2 = 1
Finally, we can answer the problem:
The car can travel a further 144 miles on the same charge.
Captain and Newton both collect stamps.
Captain has 1265 stamps in his collection.
Newton has 748 stamps.
How many more stamps does Captain have?
After reading the problem, we can see that in order to find how many more stamps Captain has we need to find the difference between 1265 and 708.
First we set up our subtraction.
Next we subtract the ones. 5 − 8 leads to a negative answer, so we will need to regroup one of the tens into 10 ones.
We can now subtract the ones. 15 − 8 = 7
Next we subtract the tens. 5 − 4 = 1.
We can now subtract the hundreds. 2 − 7 leads to a negative answer, so we will need to regroup one of the thousands into 10 hundreds
Next we subtract the hundreds. 12 − 7 = 5
Next we subtract the thousands. 0 − 0 = 0
Finally, we can answer the problem:
Captain has 517 more stamps than Newton.
There are two versions of each of the 3-digit subtraction sheets.
The first version (version A) contains problems where no regrouping is needed.
The second version (version B) contains similar problems but regrouping is needed to solve most of them.
Sheets 1A, 1B, 2A and 2B involve straightforward word problems with one number to subtract from another.
Sheets 3A and 3B are trickier sheets which involve selecting the correct information to use for the subtraction from a table.
These problems are similar to those above but involve 4-digit numbers up to 10,000.
Sheets 1 and 2 involve straightforward word problems with one number to subtract from another.
Sheet 3 is trickier and involves selecting the correct information to use from a table.
