Each sheet consists of a range of 4 or 5 subtraction word problems with numbers up to 100.
There is a space on each sheet for working out, so that your child can write out the problem and solve it.
We have split the worksheets up into word problems with and without regrouping.
Using these sheets will help your child to:
Captain has $89.
He spends $62.
How much money does he have left?
After reading the problem, we can see that we need to work out $89 subtract $62 to solve it.
First we set up our subtraction.
Next we subtract the ones. 9 − 2 = 7. There is no regrouping needed.
Next we subtract the tens. 8 − 6 = 2
To finish the subtraction we put a dollar sign in.
Finally, we can answer the problem:
He has $27 left.
There are 72 cars in a parking lot.
25 cars drive away.
How many cars are there left in the parking lot?
After reading the problem, we can see that it is a subtraction problem and that we need to work out 72 − 25 to solve it.
First we set up our subtraction.
Next we subtract the ones.
2 − 5 leads to a negative answer, so we will need to regroup one of the tens into ones.
We can now subtract the ones. 12 − 5 = 7
Next we subtract the tens. 6 − 2 = 4.
Finally, we can answer the problem:
There are 47 cars left in the parking lot.
There are two versions of each sheet.
The first version (version A) contains problems where no regrouping is needed.
The second version (version B) contains similar problems but regrouping is needed to solve them.
Sheets 1A, 1B, 2A, 2B, 3A and 3B involve straightforward word problems with one number to subtract from another.
Sheets 4A, 4B, 5A and 5B have a table showing a range of information. To answer the subtraction problem, the correct information needs to be taken from the table and the relevant numbers subtracted.
These problems are trickier than those above.
A range of information is given in a table.
To solve the subtraction problem, the relevant information needs to be gethered from the table and the amounts subtracted.
