Add and Subtract Within 20

When learning to add and subtract numbers within 20, it seems a straightforward task.

We just need to be able to work out facts like 19 - 14 or 12 + 6.

Most math worksheets will focus on this skill which is certainly a necessary one.

However, as well as learning the basic facts, there are also many more skills to learn.

Here are some of the skills and learning involved:

• learning basic addition and subtraction facts up to 20, e.g. 7 + 11, 18 - 13
• able to work out missing number facts, e.g. 7 + __ = 13, __ - 6 = 12
• able to work out facts when the 'answer' comes first, e.g. 18 = __ + 7, 4 = 19 - __
• able to understand and solve addition and subtraction word problems

Each of these sheets has a set of 24 or 30 questions and also a challenge.

The challenges get slightly harder as you progress through the sheets.

Here is a quick breakdown of the content of the sheets, with the easier sheets coming first:

• Sheets 1 & 2 have a number track to support the addition and subtraction and 24 questions.
• Sheet 3 is similar to sheet 1 but with no number track and 30 questions.
• Sheets 4 and 5 have three different numbers to add or subtract,
  e.g. 15 − 7 + 5, 4 + 14 − 8
• Sheet 6 is similar to sheet 3, but also has missing number questions.
• Sheets 7 and 8 are similar to sheet 4 but also include changes the order of the equation, e.g. 5 = 18 - 13.

These worksheets involve adding and subtracting numbers in grids.

You have to add/subtract at the number at the top of each column to/from the number at the side of the grid in each row to find the result.

• Sheets 1 and 2 have straightforward grids with a complete set of numbers at the top and left of the grid
• Sheets 3 and 4 have some missing numbers on the top and left which can be found by using the numbers inside the grid and working backwards.
• Sheet 5 has 4 mini grids to solve with missing numbers.
