We have split these 4 digit addition worksheets into 4 sections as follows, with the easiest sheets first.
We are going to take an example: 3729 + 2946 to show you how to add 4-digit numbers.
Step 1) Add the Ones digit of both numbers together.
We add the Ones: 9 + 6 = 15 Ones.
We regroup the 15 Ones into 1 Ten and 5 Ones.
We carry over 1 Ten and move it to the top of the Tens column.
We write a 5 under the line in the Ones place.
Step 2) Add the Tens digit of both numbers together, remember to add any Tens that were carried over.
We add the Tens, including the Ten we carried over: 1 + 2 + 4 = 7 Tens.
We write this number under the line in the Tens place.
Step 3) Add the Hundreds digit of both numbers together, remember to add any Hundreds that were carried over.
We add the Hundreds: 7 + 9 = 16 Hundreds.
We regroup the 16 Hundreds into 1 Thousand and 6 Hundreds.
We carry over 1 Thousand and move it to the top of the Thousands column.
We write a 6 under the line in the Hundreds place.
Step 4) Add the Thousands digit of both numbers together, remember to add any Thousands that were carried over.
We add the Thousands: 1 + 3 + 2 = 6 Thousands.

As there are no further digits to add up, we have finished.
This gives us a final answer of 3729 + 2946 = 6675

Adding the Ones gives us: 6 + 2 = 8 Ones.
We write 8 below the line in the Ones place.
Step 2) Add the Tens digit of both numbers together, remember to add any Tens that were carried over.
Adding the Tens gives us: 7 + 5 = 12 Tens = 1 Hundred + 2 Tens.
We write 1 at the top of the Hundreds column and write 2 below the line in the Tens place.

As there are no further digits to add up, we have finished.
