At a first grade level, the most important thing for children to see what a bar graph is used for and how to read one.

On this page there are a wide variety of bar and picture graphs on a variety of different topics.

The recording and drawing of bars on bar graphs can wait until 2nd grade when children are ready to do this.

The worksheets on this page focus on simple analysis of bar graphs.

All of the bar graphs first grade contain pictures of the data groups in question, so the pet bar graph contains pictures of the pets to make it easier for young children to understand.

There are also several picture graphs on this page, which is good place to start when looking at bar graphs.

Children can see what the pictures are and how many of each picture there are. It is less abstract than looking at bars.

With the picture graphs, each picture represents one unit. In higher grades, a picture can represent different numbers of unit.

  • read and answer simple questions about picture graphs;
  • read and interpret bar graphs with a scale going up in ones;
  • answer questions involving data.
