A good visual way to describe how to use the greater than and less than symbols is to imaging a crocodile's mouth.
The crocodile is a greedy creature and will always try to eat the biggest number, so his mouth always faces the largest number.
In the case above, 15 is larger than 12 so he turns to eat number 15, showing us the greater than sign.
In the case above, the larger of the two numbers is 24, so he turns to eat that number, showing us the less than sign.
There are a range of worksheets on this page which all help your child learn to compare and order numbers.
They are also a great and easy introduction to using the greater than (> ) and less than (< ) symbols.
The sheets are arranged in order of difficulty with the easiest sheets first.

The harder sheets involve evaluating expressions such as 30 + 5 and using the correct symbol: > , < or = to say how it compares with a number.
