We also have a quick quiz at the bottom of the page where you can practice your skills online.

What is an Input Output Table?

Before you learn how to answer questions about input output tables you need to know what they are and how they work.

Input and Output tables are the same thing as function tables.

Function tables consist of three parts, one of which is usually missing:

  • an input which is usually a number
  • a rule or function
  • an output which is another number

The input is acted on by the rule or function to create the output.

If you want to find out more about these types of tables before you start answering questions, then take a look at our support page.

What sort of function table questions are there?

Before we introduce out input output tables worksheets, you need some background information about the types of question you might get!

Function table (Input and Output Table) questions fall into 3 different categories:

  • finding the output if we know the input and the rule (or function).
  • finding the input if we know the output and the rule (or function).
  • finding the rule or function if both the inputs and outputs are known.

We have created a range of different worksheets for you to practice all these skills.

Input Output Tables Worksheets

We have split these worksheets into 5 different sections across two webpages.

  • The first section is the easiest with single operation rules and questions involving finding the missing outputs and inputs. They are aimed at 3rd and 4th graders.
  • The second section also contains single operation rules and the questions include finding the missing rule as well as the inputs and outputs. They are aimed at 4th/5th graders.
  • The third section contains worksheets which use both one and two-operation rules. The sheets are designed for students in the 5th/6th grade.
  • The last two sections are more advanced and use algebraic functions instead of rules. You will find these worksheets here.

Within each section, the sheets also get gradually harder.

We also have an quiz at the bottom of the page where you can practice your input output tables online.

Input Output Tables Worksheets - Section 1

These basic function table worksheets start off with one simple rule.

  • Sheets A and B involve finding the output when the input and rules are known
  • Sheet C involves finding the input and output when the rules are known.

The rules in this section are all single operation rules.

Input Output Tables Worksheets - Section 2

These worksheets involve finding the missing outputs, inputs and the missing rule in the function tables.

The rules in this section are all single operation rules.

  • Sheet 2A involves finding the missing outputs when the input and the rule are known.
  • Sheet 2B involves finding the missing inputs and outputs when the rule is known.
  • Sheet 2C and 2D involve finding the missing rules when the inputs and outputs are known.
  • Sheet 2C has inputs increasing by 1 each time to make the rule much easier to find.
  • Sheet 2D is more challenging with randomly chosen input numbers.

Input Output Tables Worksheets - Section 3

These worksheets involve finding the missing outputs, inputs and the missing rule in the function tables.

The rules in this section have single operation and two-operation rules.

  • Sheet 3A involves finding the missing outputs when the input and the rule are known.
  • Sheet 3B involves finding the missing inputs and outputs when the rule is known.
  • Sheet 3C and 3D involve finding the missing rules when the inputs and outputs are both known.
  • Sheet 3C has inputs increasing by 1 each time to make the rule much easier to find.
  • Sheet 3D is much more challenging with randomly chosen input numbers.

They involve using algebraic functions rather than rules.

How to answer Function Table questions

We have created a support page to help you to answer a range of questions involving function tables.

Each of the three different types of question above are included in our worked examples which are solved step-by-step.
