Two Digit Subtraction Without Regrouping

Here you will find a range of 2-digit Subtraction Worksheets without regrouping set out in columns.

Using these sheets will help your child to:

  • use column subtraction to subtract two 2-digit numbers where no regrouping is needed;
  • set out a 2 digit column subtraction correctly;

The sheets are graded so that you can select the right level of challenge.

  • Sheet 1 has fewer calculations and a larger font;
  • Sheets 2, 3 and 4 have more calculations;
  • Sheets 5 and 6 require children to re-write the subtraction in columns and work it out.

2 Digit Subtraction Worked Examples

Neither of these two examples have any regrouping.

Example 1) Work out 89 − 35.

Step 1) Subtract the Ones digit on the bottom row from the Ones digit in the top row.

Subtracting the Ones gives us: 9 − 5 = 4.
We write 4 below the line in the Ones place.

Step 2) Subtract the Tens digit on the bottom row from the Tens digit on the top row.

Subtracting the Tens gives us: 8 − 3 = 5.
We write 5 below the line in the Tens place.

As there are no further digits to subtract, we have finished.

2 digit subtraction example 1c

This gives us a final answer of 89 − 35 = 54


Example 2) Work out 64 − 30.

Step 1) Subtract the Ones digit on the bottom row from the Ones digit in the top row.

Subtracting the Ones gives us: 4 − 0 = 4.
We write 4 below the line in the Ones place.

2 digit subtraction example 3b

Step 2) Subtract the Tens digit on the bottom row from the Tens digit on the top row.

Subtracting the Tens gives us: 6 − 3 = 3.
We write 3 below the line in the Tens place.

As there are no further digits to subtract, we have finished.

This gives us a final answer of 64 − 30 = 34
