When we are teaching children how to find 10 more or 10 less than a number, we need to use the language both ways round.
In other words, as well as asking questions such as 'what is 10 more than 45?' we could also ask '55 is 10 more than which number?'
An example showing the language we need children to be confident using is shown below:
So we have included a range of questions in some of our worksheets which uses the language in different ways:
Sheets 1A and 1B both have a 100 square which is used to support adding and subtracting 10. Both sheets contain simple worded questions (see example above)
Sheets 2A and 2B contains a place value grid with a number in the middle. Students have to find 10 more and 10 less than the number and write them in the grids.
Sheets 3A and 3B contain tables with the number written in the middle column. Students have to write the number 10 less to the left of the number and 10 more to the right.
