The formula for the area of a circle is: \[ A = \pi r^2 \] where r is the radius of the circle.

To find the area of a circle, follow these simple steps:

  • find the radius of the circle (the distance from one side to the center of the circle). It is the same as half of the diameter of the circle.
  • square the radius (multiply the radius by itself)
  • multiply this amount by pi (π)
  • you have now found the area of the circle.
  • the formula for the area of a circle is \[ A = \pi \times r \times r \] \[ \; or \; A = \pi r^2 \] where A is the area and r is the radius of the circle.

Pi (written π ) is a special mathematical number which is used to help calculate areas and perimeters of circles.

Pi always has the same value which is 3.141592...
