### Converting Fractions to Decimals

To convert a fraction to a decimal, you need to understand that the fraction sign — and the division sign ÷ are actually the same!

So in other words: ${a \over b} \; = \; a ÷ b$

If you use a calculator, it is quite easy to convert a fraction into a decimal. If you do not have a calculator, you can still convert a fraction into a decimal using long (or short) division.

### How to convert a fraction to a decimal

• Take the numerator of the fraction and divide it by the denominator.
• Your calculator will now display the fraction as a decimal.

#### Example 1) Change into a decimal the fraction: ${3 \over 8}$

We calculate 3 ÷ 8 = 0.375

So we have: ${ 3 \over 8 } \; = \; 0.375$

#### Example 2) Convert into a decimal the fraction ${9 \over 20}$

We calculate 9 ÷ 20 = 0.45

This gives us: ${ 9 \over 20 } \; = \; 0.45$

#### Example 3) Convert into a decimal the fraction $4 {1 \over 5}$

We calculate 1 ÷ 5 = 0.2

This gives us: $4 { 1 \over 5 } \; = \; 4 + 0.2 \; = \; 4.2$

#### Example 4) Convert into a decimal the fraction ${13 \over 4}$

We calculate 13 ÷ 4 = 3.25

This gives us: ${ 13 \over 4 } \; = \; 3.25$
