A nautical mile is used to measure distances at sea. It is equal to 1 minute of the Earth's latitude.

It is slightly longer than a 'normal' mile.

1 nautical mile = 1.15078 miles.

So 1 knot = 1.15078 miles per hour.

How to convert mph to knots

To convert an amount from miles per hour to knots, you just need to divide the amount by 1.151 (to 3dp).

This is because 1 knot = 1.151 miles per hour (to 3dp).

Alternatively, you can multiply the amount in miles per hour by 0.869 (to 3dp) to convert it into knots.

1) Convert 15 miles per hour into knots.

To convert from mph to knots we need to divide by 1.151.

15 ÷ 1.151 = 13.035

So 15 knots is 13.0 mph to 1dp.

2) Convert 32 mph into knots. Give your answer to 1dp.

To convert from mph to knots we need to divide by 1.151.

32 ÷ 1.151 = 27.807

So 32 mph is 27.8 knots to 1dp.

3) What is 56 mph in knots? Give your answer to the nearest whole.

To convert from mph to knots we need to divide by 1.151.

56 ÷ 1.151 = 48.663

So 56 mph is 49 knots to the nearest whole.

4) How many knots is 70 miles per hour? Give your answer to the nearest knot.

To convert from mph to knots we need to divide by 1.151.

70 ÷ 1.151 = 60.828

So 70 mph is 61 knots to the nearest knot.
