By the time children get to preschool, most of them will be able to count up to 10, and some of them may reach quite a bit higher.

However, what many of them will not be able to do is to write numbers and count a specific number of objects.

They need to learn 1:1 correspondence and to have a system for counting where they count each object once and once only without missing any out.

There are 3 versions of this activity: 5A, 5B and 5C which are in order of difficulty.

• the first sheet shows just 5 newts which need to be colored in and there is only one line of numbers to trace
• the second sheet shows a selection of 6 newts of which 5 need to be colored in, and one line of numbers to trace
• the 3rd sheet shows a selection of 10 newts with 5 of them to color in and three lines of numbers to trace.

You have to complete 5 lines of each number.

There are two versions:

• Sheet A involves tracing each number using the guides provided.
• Sheet B is more advanced and involves tracing the first number on each line using the guide provided and completing the rest of the line independently.
