With most speeds like miles per hour, the higher the number, the faster you are going.
But this is not the case with minutes per mile!
Example
Tyger travels at 4 minutes per mile. Captain travels at 3 minutes per mile.
Who is traveling faster?
Tyger takes 4 minutes to travel a mile, but Captain only takes 3 minutes to travel a mile, so Captain is traveling faster.
How to convert Minutes per Mile to mph
To convert an amount from Minutes per Mile to Miles per Hour, you just need to divide 60 by the number of minutes per mile.
In other words:
This is because 60 minutes per mile = 1 mile per hour.
1) Convert 12 minutes per mile into miles per hour.
To convert from minutes per mile into mph we need to divide 60 by the number of minutes per mile.
60 ÷ 12 = 5
So 12 minutes per mile = 5 mph.
2) Convert 2 minutes per mile into mph.
To convert from minutes per mile into mph we need to divide 60 by the number of minutes per mile.
60 ÷ 2 = 30
So 2 minutes per mile is the same as 30 mph.
3) Tyger runs a mile in 9.5 minutes. How many miles per hour did he average?
To convert from minutes per mile into mph we need to divide 60 by the number of minutes per mile.
60 ÷ 9.5 = 6.3 (to 1dp)
So he averaged a speed of 6.3 miles per hour (to 1dp).
4) A racing car takes 0.4 minutes to travel a mile. How many mph was it averaging?
To convert from minutes per mile into mph we need to divide 60 by the number of minutes per mile.
60 ÷ 0.4 = 150
So the car was travelling at an average speed of 150 mph.
